The damaging impacts of growing transnational operations and free trade are clearly unsustainable. These impacts often hit the most vulnerable groups in society the hardest, particularly amongst the poor, both in the rich North and the developing South. Their voices are rarely heard, although there are strong grassroots movements in many countries demanding greater land rights, access to secure well-paid jobs, and control over their own local economies.
